Berwald, Franz

Franz(Adolf) Berwald (1796-1868), Swedish composer and violinist. He learned to play violin from his father and joined the orchestra. In 1828 he left the court orchestra and with a scholarship , went to Berlin, Vienna to study. During 1818-1820, he toured Finland and Russia as a violinist. He returned to Stockholm in 1842 and taught at the Swedish Royal Academy of Music. He composed operas, 4 symphonies, a violin concerto, orchestral and chamber music.
